SMART Goals Are Not So Smart

I’ve been living by SMART goals for as long as I can remember.  I’ve recommended that clients set SMART goals to help them progress on their Journey.  So, you can imagine how floored I was the first time I heard the sentence: “SMART goals are not so smart.”

I was sitting in class for my latest life coaching certification, attentively listening to my teacher as she got into the topic of goal setting.  I thought to myself: “I know this!”  And that’s when I heard my teacher say: “SMART goals are not so smart.”  Wait, what?!?!?!

The fact of the matter is that SMART goals are limiting.  Their very nature is meant to put a cap on what can be achieved.  Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time specific.  You are essentially limiting yourself to what your mind can consciously determine to fit into the SMART goal requirements.

However, the laws of the Universe operate very differently from our conscious human mind.  The universe knows no limit, while our human mind will set a goal that it thinks can be achieved by us.  An example of this is someone who would like to shed 50 lb of weight and sets out to slim down by one pound per week for the next 50 weeks.  It is a SMART goal.  Do you see how this can limit the person to only achieving this goal in the timeline they have set and not achieve more than that?

The intention you put out is what the Universe conspires to give.  Now take that same person who sends out into the Universe that she is to have a strong, healthy and slim body; and she focuses on the vision of herself as a strong, healthy and slim individual.  By taking the same steps to achieve the weight loss goal, the person focused on the end-result is more likely to achieve beyond the goal set in her consciousness.

The visions we hold in our minds allow the Universe to work in our favor while the SMART goals we are setting for ourselves limit us to what we think we can achieve.  Why not put the Universe to work for you and set out to achieve without the limits imposed by your mind.  You may believe you can only achieve a certain amount or thing, but you may be surprised to find out that by letting go of that “HOW” details, you achieve so much more.
